Pieces of Place addresses the theme of urban contexts, and specifically the fragmentary nature of the city and our personal sense of place. Originally an immigrant to Canada and now a long-time resident, the artist reflects on the personal story of displacement, migration and living in liminal spaces. This photographic project seeks to connect to others whose experiences of displacement have created a sense of shifting territories that exist between the here and there. The photographs and accompanying text seek to evoke the experience of residing in one city, while being reminded of and drawn to the city of origin. Memories, sights and recalled places, serve to complicate the relationship to one’s surroundings. The embedded text moves beyond the descriptive or informational to draw viewers literally and symbolically closer to the images and into a space of reflection on the fraught experience of navigating and negotiating a far from idealized relationship to the cities we inhabit. One by one, the images tell a fragment of the story of living in multiple spaces.
